Description

Tel Aviv is rated the ‘Third Hottest City’ in the world for 2011 by The Lonely Planet travel guide, and ‘The Mediterranean’s New Capital of Cool’ by the Wallpaper City Guidebook.

This is one of the single most “walkable” cities I have ever experienced and I have seen my fair share. From the Bauhaus neighborhoods of the trendy  Neve Zedek, continue to the “HaTachana”, the old railway station from the 19th century. Now a beautifully revived tourist destination with modern shops and restaurants. Proceed to old city of Jaffa where we will visit the clock tower, the Ottoman “Seraya” bulding , and the old city.

Learn about Tel Aviv’s rich history. We will see where Tel Aviv’s past merges with its present. We will start in Jaffa which became part of the Tel Aviv municipality in 1950. We will discuss Jaffa’s ancient history and more recent gentrification efforts. Was originally built as the modern extension of the old city of Jaffa, which was conquered by Napoleon in 1799 and is now commonly referred to as Tel Aviv-Jaffa (or Yaffo in Hebrew). TA Is classified as a beta + world city, alongside cities such as Barcelona, Spain and San Francisco.

On to the ancient city of Jaffa (Yafo in Hebrew). This area has a long history dating back to the Bronze Age when it was first used as a port. Jaffa is known for its archaeological ruins, a stunning view of the Mediterranean Sea (see above), and and the narrow winding alleyways of the artist colony. Today the ancient Yafo port has been renovated to accommodate trendy cafes, really great seafood restaurants, an indoor market displaying local works of art and sculpture. A short distance from the famous Clock Tower, Jaffa’s flea market or “Shuk” sells everything from cooking equipment to gifts and everything in between. Be ready to negotiate the price. It is a national past time. As you walk the streets, feel the energy in the ground and in the air, take in the sweet aromas of the local foods and spices. This is a can’t miss tour and will make you feel a part of the city and its culture.
